Perforated Metal

perforated metal- an all purpose material for the designer or store plannerPerforating, the process of punching holes in a given material, requires presses capable of generating a great enough penetrable force and tooling made specifically to withstand the pressure of repetitious blows yet versatile enough to produce a number of desired patterns. The general rule regarding perforating is that the hole diameter should not be less than the thickness of the material. For stainless steels and similar higher strength materials, it is preferable to specify at least three thickness gauges thinner than hole diameter. The same general rule applies to bar width.

Perforated metal can be a useful all-purpose material for the designer or store planner. Because the process is so adaptable to designers requirements, the uses are practically endless – backgrounds, walls, furniture and cabinets to name just a few. An economical alternative, it can be incorporated into anything from displays to shelving to light fixtures.

Not only a display material, perforated metal can be used in different store fixture functions such as to screen, ventilate, enclose, protect, absorb sound or creative decoration. Various types of metals can be customized for hole shape, size and pattern. In addition to standard perforated patterns, most companies can perforate metal and other materials up to a ½” thick and 6 ft wide.

Perforation Descriptions and Examples
Large perforation spacing- designated by either the center of perforations or by the open area required
Small perforation spacing- designated by centers, open area or the number of perforations per square inch.
Slotted or Decorative Perforations- Side staggered, end staggered, or straight lines. Slotted perforations will be round end slots.
